We used to host funpic.org at Theplanet USA. Our technical capabilites were very limited there though. (rented hardware, no access because of distance,...)

We have now moved all of funpic.org over to our facility based in Germany where we've got our own hardware with more than 100 servers, 200 cpus, multiple gbit/s uplinks and the list goes on.

funpic.org has been integrated in our new cluster based on Zeus ZXTM technology. This gives us failover capabilities for almost any part of our services so there should be almost no downtime / performance problems anymore. In about 2 months new features and higher filesizes etc will be added.

Of course such kind of hardware cannot be payed for without ads. That's also the reason we have introduced ads now.

They are far smaller and shown less frequently then on pretty much any free webhost out there. Plus we don't know of any which has invested this kind of money in such hardware as we did.

All in all the ads will stay and are not up for discussion. There won't be a a way to place / integrate them by yourself since that's not possible from a technical point of view (no need for advice it's like that period). We won't check hundreds of thousands of pages by hand every day.

There will be a way to disable the ads by refering new (active) users to funpic.org. We'll introduce this system shortly and give you some more infos about it then.

Please think twice before writing any crap like "blah blah bad ads blah blah greedy blah blah sucks blah blah". We won't tolerate any of that.

happy hosting

Hey Funpic,

I understand the reasons for adding the adds, but it would really be nice to see also some kind of system where you could get rid of it right away in stead of leading other persons to funpic, cause thats a kind of slow and unsurten way.. would it be possible to also make some kind of system where people can make an onetime donation or something like that to remove the adds immediately? for instance something like: want to get rid of the adds? pay x euro once and you will never see any adds again, to pay: call xxxx. i think sutch a system would be prefered by a lot of people..

further, it would have been better if you have provided the add-away system you have in mind the same time with adding the adds to the sites.. dont forget that a lot of people have chosen for funpic because of the no banner-rule.. especially users with dayly visitors on their side will probably now considerate if they would not better to even change to a paid-host.. the suggestion above would kind of give a nice alternative

well, hope you give it a thought and keep up the nice work!

Wouldn't it be nicer to not have the ads cover up content? Maybe just a banner along the top or something instead of covering up half of my blog.

You also added an update for Custom 404 Pages, but it doesn't work....

I think we should have a different method, which is that after a certain amount of click on the ad ("A view from our sponsors!"), it will go away. This way, we tell our users "Support us by viewing our sponsors," and we make money for you guys, and, say, after 500 clicks, they go away for 6 months or something. But, you said closed discussion, so I'm assuming this isn't changing.

See, the major inconvenience of this is that a major part of my site is a shoutbox used on someone else's InvisionFree forum (because they like IF). The shoutbox is in an iframe. ADS DON'T WORK ON IFRAMES.
I am very sorry to Funpic, but I had to move this shoutbox portion of my site to another free Web host called PHPNet.Us. I'm betraying you all, but it just doesn't work any other way.

But yeah, when will we be able to customize 404 and stuff?

Please allow us to at least choose the content of the ads!

I run a semi-popular World of Warcraft fan site, and am now being forced to display ads promoting the sale of in-game gold. This practice is prohibited by the game TOS, and if these types of ads are going to be displayed on my site I will be forced to move elsewhere. I love funpic and have been very happy with the service thus far. I will gladly donate a reasonable amount to keep garbage like this off my site.

If you are not going to be accepting donations or providing some other means for us to remove the ads (or even customize what types of ads are shown) very soon (like, within the next week or two) I will be moving my site elsewhere as soon as I can.

Like I said... I love you guys and have been very pleased with the service up until now. I can tolerate ads on my site, but not when they are advertising what pretty much amounts to an *illegal* activity. Gold selling is against the World of Warcraft Terms of Service, and I don't want those types of ads on my site. Anything else I can deal with, but not that.

Please reconsider the ads, and open up a donation program. Or give us some means to customize or choose what types of ads are shown and what types of ads should not be shown. Thank you.

Ok i think some of you just dont get it.. Funpic is a free host thats what they wanna be. But, the costs to create a webhost are pretty high. Donations, or paying to remove adds and stuff are similiar to paid hosts i think, you pay an amount of money to remove the adds.. kinda like a paid hosts. Only then you pay not for the hosts but for the adds.
I think funpic had a good income from google adds, so why should they stop google adds? Now you can create 404 error pages. Thats where the google adds were placed on.. so now they created google adds in a pop-up. Way better then integrating it in your website.. people can click it away when they dont like the advertation. When its integrated you cannot click it away.

Funpic is a way better host then other paid hosts, they also think about secuirity. Its free and i hope it stays free. Thats what it is, if you dont like it leave.

you can't simply click that away, it comes back all the time and that`s really getting on the nerves..

I would have nothing against ads on the bottom of my website, even integrated.

I agree with everyone - funpic needs to get rid of these ads. I have lots of text and imagery on my page, and the 3/4 inch ad down the right is blocking out MY ads and my CONTENT.

Please, make a script so we can re-position AT LEAST. If not, then I will personally DONATE to get rid of these.
