I began with AdSense a while ago, but I stopped using it because my site has some erotic content (resulting in Public Service Ads) and I didn't want to get my account banned (using it on other small sites also).
Since then I've been mainly using AdBrite and I must say that I like it. They don't offer contextual advertising, just ads from the categories that you select. They pay per click. The ads are customizable to some extent (by using CSS), but not as easily as AdSense. The biggest advantage of AdBrite is that your visitors can buy adspace on your website. You, as a webmaster, can set the prices yourself.
I've been using it for almost a month now and made around 18$ so far (with around 1500 pageviews/day). Haven't received my first check yet, because the minimum payment is 20$.
